Burke County’s reputation as an area ready for industrial growth got a big boost last week. According to EMSI, an international firm which advises leaders in higher education, business and community development, Burke County is among the top five small counties in the nation when it comes to attracting and retaining talent. Burke County Development Authority Executive Director Jessica Hood said this week that “talent attraction remains one of the top concerns for companies looking to locate in a community. The informa- tion provided in this talent attraction scorecard make a very good case for the strong local workforce we have here in Burke County, as well as our ability to attract talent from within the region.” The firm bases its rankings on several criteria. Among them are the quality of local leadership, quality of life, cost of living, housing and the quality of K-12 education. Burke County rose from 266th place in 2016 to third in 2017 among small counties across the country. Another Georgia county, Twiggs, moved from 129th in 2016 to fifth in 2017. Burke was cited for its 70 percent growth of skilled jobs and the fact that there are 652 skilled job openings here.
