The Development Authority of Burke County (DABC) has an extensive list of accomplishments for fiscal year (FY) 2016, one which includes a level of prospect activity that far exceeds the numbers from recent years.

According to DABC Executive Director Jessica Hood, the development authority has received 14 new project inquiries and 15 community visits from companies looking to expand or relocate their operations during FY 2016, which runs alongside the federal model of Oct. 1 through Sept. 30. Those numbers are more than double the average from 2010 to 2015 in which the DABC recorded just six new inquiries from industrial clients and two community visits per fiscal year.

Hood said that in addition to increased activity on the recruitment side, Purification Cellutions recently announced the addition of new jobs at its Waynesboro facility, which will increase employment from 47 to 147 full-time employees by the end of 2017.

“Authority staff and board remain hopeful that the Purifi- cation Cellutions expansion … will serve to offset the loss of jobs associated with the closure of Butler Home Products and Sam Dong earlier this year,” she said.

During their board meeting last week, DABC Chairman W.H. Harper, Jr. said, “Industrial interest in the community continues to remain strong, and we think that we will see even more companies who are looking to come to Burke County in 2017.”

Hood credits the DABC’s marketing campaign for the recent increase in interest. Since October 2015, the DABC has held events for statewide project managers, site selection consultants and commercial real estate brokers to become more familiar with the local community. Additionally, DABC staff and board members participated in various meetings and conferences on local, regional and state levels in order to boost their visibility with target audiences.

“Making continuous efforts to stay front-of-mind with our economic development partners is what helps get Burke County in the running for industrial projects that will bring jobs and investment to our community,” Hood said. “From there, putting our best foot forward in terms of having the right size industrial site or building, necessary infrastructure in place and a robust workforce to support industry needs is what will keep us on the list, and gets our community second and third looks from these companies.”
